TEMPLE IN SEGESTA | ![]() SICILIA Trapani |
A Greek temple not built by the Greeks
The temple is a
magnificent building in perfect Doric style but it is not
possible to define it "Greek" as those at
Agrigento and at Selinunte (Selinus). Greeks, actually, started building from
the cell and then built the colonnade all round. At Segesta, instead, there's no trace of a cell and
other ingongruenties, observed, witnessed that the temple
wasn't built by the Greeks.
They may have built it to compete with the big temples at Selinunte, Greek colony and Segesta's implacable enemy.
A Greek theatre built by the Romans
During the summer, every two years, in alternation with the theatre at Syracuse, high quality classical plays are organized by the Istituto Nazionale del Dramma Antico.
Experts are excavating to bring to light the ancient Roman and the Medival cities
