Poeta e critico inglese. Esordì come poeta con la raccolta
Masques and
Poems (1922), cui seguirono
Poems (1926) e
Inscription on a
Fountain Head (1929). Nel 1930 fu professore di Inglese
all'università di Tokyo; in seguito diresse il «Cornhill
Magazine» e «History Today». Scrisse diversi libri su G.G. Byron
(
The Years of Fame, 1935;
Byron in Italy, 1941) e su J. Ruskin
(
John Ruskin: the Portrait of a Prophet, 1949). Tra le altre sue opere
