Attore cinematografico e teatrale inglese. Iniziata la sua attività come attore teatrale in Gran Bretagna e negli Stati Uniti, fu costretto ad abbandonare le scene per partecipare alla prima guerra mondiale. Pur avendo riportato una mutilazione permanente, tornò nel dopoguerra a recitare in teatro ed esordì sugli schermi nel 1927, raggiungendo una notevole fama. Tra i suoi film più noti ricordiamo: Blonde Venus (1932), I was a spy (1933), The painted veil (1934), The dark angel (1935), Angel (1937), The letter (1940), The little foxes (1941), The moon and sixpence (1942), The razor's edge (1946), The Virgin queen (1955), Midnight lace (1960) (Marlow, Londra 1890 - Beverly Hills 1966).
